ALL CLUB RIDES TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED
Recent actions taken by Governor Inslee and local authorities in response to the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) have prompted the board to suspend ALL club rides effective immediately. Because we love to ride together, this was a difficult decision. So why did we decide to suspend ALL club rides and use of our Buddies List NOW?
1. Washington State Governor Jay Inslee announced new guidelines for groups (maximum size is now 50 - down from 250 - and likely to go even lower) and steps have been taken to close restaurants, bars, and recreational facilities.
2.
USA Cycling
and the
League of American Bicyclists
(of which we are a member) have recommended cancellation of all gatherings, racing, and group rides until further notice.
3.
Five Borough Bicycle Club
(NYC) and
Cascade Bicycle Club
(the largest bicycle club in the US, based in Seattle) have cancelled all their group rides until further notice.
4. While the chances of transmission while riding outside may be low,
infections are still possible
. The virus is highly contagious, relatively resilient, and growing numbers of infections are expected.
5. Current efforts nationally and at the state level are aimed at avoiding a large number of infections that overwhelm the health care system and endanger even more lives. Suspending group rides seemed to be consistent with this goal.
As we discussed these items and the pros and cons of suspending group riding, it was the safety of our members, their families and our community that guided our final decision. It's hard not knowing how long this season will last but remember . . . it won't last forever.
For many of us, riding is more than a sport or a just a way to stay in shape. It's a way to interact with others and an important part of our lives. Life is too short and precious to squander it in indifference or fear or panic. Continue riding in responsible and safe ways.

Absolutely be smart and take precautions to limit your exposure to groups (especially vulnerable populations), but don't stop living and loving.
Check in with a friend and look to how you might encourage someone you know who might be experiencing anxiety or loneliness.
Know that we'll look to reinstate club rides just as soon as it's safe to do so.
