This 32-mile loop isn't for the faint of heart. It's a challenge, but one richly rewarded with panoramic vistas of bucolic north Clark County. Your legs will burn, but your spirit will soar. Starting from the Little League parking lot in La Center, we roll through View, WA, aptly named for the breathtaking landscapes that unfold as we climb. Soon, Mt. St. Helens rises in the distance, a majestic reminder of the region's volcanic power. A welcome pitstop at the historic Grist Mill offers restrooms and a chance to refuel before tackling the next leg. Clark County's charming covered bridge serves as a picturesque gateway to the ascent up Goodnight Road. Don't let the name fool you - this climb will test your limits, but the sense of accomplishment at the summit is unparalleled. From here, the reward awaits. Let gravity do the work as you savor a miles-long descent, the stunning scenery washing over you with each pedal stroke. Back in La Center, the satisfaction of conquering this epic loop will linger long after your wheels come to a stop.

Hockinson is less than a mile away if you want to add a significant hill. You have stores at the start, in Battle Ground, and Hockinson. Very snack/restroom friendly! You can add miles and hills with one of the optional route extensions before rejoining the rest of the gang on the main loop.

The route does two loops along lightly traveled roads. The ride starts by going West thru suburban residential areas and includes a great downhill (Felida Hill). It then heads East out toward Battle Ground on country roads then returns back West to Salmon Creek. This figure 8 route means you can easily bail out if the weather gets bad or someone wants to do a shorter ride. You can add distance by taking 99th Street out to China Ditch and returning via 159th and Parkinen.

This double loop route adds a little challenge by starting with rolling hills from Salmon Creek to Ridgefield. Most of the roads are lightly traveled except for Hillhurst - which can be very busy on weekends and afternoons. On the return South, Kreiger offers great views along the Columbia River. The second loop is a flater, going West out to Ashley Heights. There is a great downhill (Felida Hill) before return to Salmon Creek. The figure * route offers multiple bailout options if the weather turns bad.

Banks-Vernonia State Trail is an out and back ride that follows an 21 mile abandoned railroad bed between Banks and Vernonia. The gentle grade allows bicyclists of all abilities to enjoy the scenic mountains, fields and forests of Washington and Columbia counties. The trail include 13 bridges and views from the 733-foot long, 80-foot high Buxton Trestle. The south end of the trail begins in Banks, a town surrounded by agricultural operations. Heading north, the trail passes agricultural lands and riparian areas before reaching the thickly-forested foothills of the Coast Range and ending in Vernonia, a town surrounded by private timberland and small farms. The trail can be accessed from one of the five trailheads, but most riders start at the Banks Trailhead. It is fun to stop for lunch in Vernonia before heading back down.

Meandering paths through neighborhoods so riders can pedal and yak safely at the same time. One rider declared, its 'wanderlustiness' recaptured his boyhood of neighborhood riding. The ride goes past 11 parks in 15 miles, almost one every mile. Lots of opportunity to chitchat because most of it is very low traffic street or path.
