Ride Description
This is a classic VBC ride now offered on a weekend for those who can't make the traditional weekday ride... or anyone who wants to experience this great event.
It was February 28, 2001 and Dennis Funk was leading about ten registrants on a relatively new ride that he had created. At the time, it was called the "Wednesday Morning Ride". At 10:54 AM the group was in the Felida neighborhood around NW 46th Ave and NW 131st St. Suddenly Dennis felt the earthquake and stopped the group. The tremors lasted about 30 to 40 seconds.
After the ride, while at a coffee shop, everyone was talking about it and someone said they should change the name to the "Earthquake Ride", and it has been called that ever since. It has also been on the Event Calendar ever since, and can now be found in several variations, all still on Wednesday mornings.
This route heads west through downtown Vancouver, then turns north along Lakeshore Ave to Ashley Heights and the lovely Felida neighborhood before returning to 119th St via 36th Ave. Includes a 7 mile loop along Salmon Creek Ave, past Pleasant Valley Elementary School on 50th Ave., back to 119th St. and returning on Hazel Dell Ave and Columbia southbound.
Ride ends with a climb up Blandford hill.
