Get ready for a great workout and a scenic tour through the charming town of Camas, Washington. This ride offers a mix of smooth, flat sections for a good tempo, and a few hills to get your heart pumping. We'll ride through some of the area's most beautiful neighborhoods and enjoy the newly paved sections of SE Evergreen Highway.

RIDE HIGHLIGHTS ?????

This ride has something for everyone, from great flats to challenging climbs:

  • A Solid Workout: Test your legs on the flat sections and then enjoy a more leisurely pace while exploring downtown Camas and its lovely neighborhoods.
  • Smooth Roads & Scenic Views: We'll be on quiet streets with stunning residential properties in the River Shore Landing, Lacamas Shores, and Riveridge communities. The route includes the newly paved section of SE Evergreen Highway east of 164th Street.
  • Two Attention-Grabbing Hills: Be prepared for a four-block climb up Garfield Street in Camas and the longer, more gradual ascent on Lake Road alongside Lacamas Lake. We'll bypass the notorious Prune Hill.
  • No "Pointless Ups and Downs" (PUDs): We've carefully planned the route to avoid unnecessary climbs, so you can focus on the fun parts of the ride.
  • Optional Downtown Stop: We'll take an optional rest and food break at Caffe Piccolo in downtown Camas. Restrooms will be available along the way.
  • Route Gallery: Want a sneak peek? Check out pictures from the route on the Ride with GPS gallery.

RIDE LOGISTICS & COMMUNICATION ??

To ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable ride, we'll generally stay together since the route out of Camas is complex. If you're a faster rider and want to go ahead, please upload the route from Ride with GPS to your device. Don't worry, no one will be dropped. We'll take breaks as needed. It would be a huge help if someone would volunteer to "sweep," or ride at the back of the group to ensure everyone stays together.
  • Questions: Feel free to call the ride leader at 503-334-6356 with any questions.
  • Weather Decision: In case of bad weather, we'll make a go/no-go decision and post it by 7:30 a.m. on ride day.
THE HISTORY OF CAMAS ??

As we ride through Camas, you'll be cycling through a rich history. The town's original name, "La Camas," was derived from the camas lily. The bulbs of this flower were a food source for native peoples, who processed them into a flour for bread and a molasses-like sweetener.

The Mill Town Era

The first industries to settle here were a series of lumber mills, all of which were lost to devastating fires in the mid-1800s. A successful operation was finally established in 1883 when Henry Pittock, owner of The Oregonian, built a mill to provide paper stock for his and other newspapers. The town grew around this mill, which itself went through several owners and more fires.

We'll see the town fountain, which for decades served as Camas' central horse trough. During World War I, it was the location of the unusual "Slacker's Monument," an obelisk containing the names of all the local men who refused to be drafted.

The mill eventually became part of the Zellerbach Corporation. During World War II, the plant not only produced paper products but also wooden rudders for Liberty ships being manufactured downriver by Henry J. Kaiser. After the war, the business merged with Georgia Pacific, its present owner.

A New Identity

As mill operations contracted and declined, Camas' downtown expanded, finding new life as a vibrant artistic, cultural, and culinary destination.
