ABOUT THE RIDE

  • Scenic and challenging: Get a good workout on a route with gradual hills spaced throughout, a few steep “granny gear” climbs, and a chance to slow down and take in the beautiful views of Oswego Lake.

  • Beautiful neighborhoods: Ride on quiet streets through Lake Oswego and Dunthorpe, admiring spectacular residential properties.

  • Diverse terrain: The route features bikeways, paths, and smooth, low-traffic roads. On busier streets like Terwilliger, you'll find good shoulders for a safer ride.

  • Amenities: Several restrooms will be available along the route.

  • Route photos: You can check out pictures of the route's most picturesque sections in the Ride with GPS gallery.

RIDE LOGISTICS

  • Group riding: The route is complex, so we will generally stay together. Fast riders who want to go ahead are welcome to do so, but we recommend they upload the route from Ride with GPS. No one will be dropped!

  • Breaks: We will take breaks as needed.

  • Sweep volunteer: It would be a great help if someone volunteers to "sweep" and ensure everyone stays with the group.

  • Contact: If you have questions, call the leader at 503.334.6356.

  • Weather: In the event of inclement weather, a go/no-go decision will be made and posted no later than 7:30 a.m. on ride day.

ROUTE HIGHLIGHTS

Oswego Lake's origins trace back to the Great Missoula Flood (13,000–15,000 years ago). Originally part of a former channel of the Tualatin River, it has since changed course. We will see the concrete dam, built in 1921, which expanded the lake to 432 acres and reclassified it as a reservoir. Development began in the mid-1920s, and some of the area's most architecturally significant homes, such as the Carl Jantzen Estate, are located on its shoreline. Access to the lake has been a contentious legal issue for decades. Some of the most beautiful homes in greater Portland are also located along our route in neighboring Dunthorpe, whose residents have included Clyde Drexler, Danny Glover, and former U.S. Senator Bob Packwood.
