DETAILS :
Return to an Old Favorite - Prune Hill: A Climber's Dream!
This ride features:
- Spectacular residential properties along River Drive and Evergreen
- Smooth (save a 1.5 mile section of Evergreen east from 164th), low traffic roads heading east
- Up to 15° climbs on Lacamas Lane, 44th Avenue and Dahlia
- Plenty of "Pointless Ups and Downs" (or PUDs, an Appalachian Trail hiking term that works for Prune Hill!)
- Beautiful views from the top
- Breathtaking descents
- Bonus miles on the return as we ride from one end of the Burnt Bridge Creek Trail to the other
- Many restrooms
Our loop ride goes east on River Road/Evergreen into Camas, then heads to Lacamas Lake and up an assortment of inclines to the top of Prune Hill. The return route will be along mostly flat McGilvray/SE 98th and 97th Avenues to the Burnt Bridge Creek Trail, then Fruit Valley and Mill Plain to the finish.
In 1876 a Clark County entrepreneur planted the first plum trees which were intended for the commercial market. His plan was to dry them (becoming prunes) and ship them nationwide. By the turn of the 19th century Clark County was the leading grower and worldwide exporter of prunes. Much of the county, including what is now known as "Prune Hill", was covered with orchards. Prune Hill is now covered with homes, but the hills remain to be conquered.
Check out pictures of select sections of the route on the Ride with GPS site.
While the route is somewhat complex, we'll generally stay together to avoid dead-ends and unnecessary PUDs. However, faster riders are welcome to push ahead, especially if they upload the route from Ride with GPS. Rest assured, no one will be dropped! We'll take breaks as needed, and it would be a great help if someone volunteers to sweep.
Don't hesitate to call the ride leader at 503.334.6356 if you have any questions. In the event of inclement weather a go/no-go decision will be made and posted no later than 8:00 AM on ride day.
