Rider Update July 4 accident
Author Last Post

HI all -    I wanted to send a quick update on Ken O’Day as several people within VBC have reached out and asked.  I also personally, and on behalf of the family, want to thank all of you who have shared the link, donated to Ken’s gofundme and been a part of the caring by helping spread awareness for the rights and safety of all cyclists.   This is an amazing community!   I’m attaching the link again below   Please continue to share with others.

Ken was moved out of the ICU about 4 days ago and is now in the in-house rehab facility at the hospital.  He is undergoing specialty therapy sessions three times a day.  It’s estimated he will leave the hospital in about 3 more weeks and the family is working on the next steps after his release, including interim housing and/or home modifications along with ongoing therapy assistance.    His wife has been practically living at the hospital as well, so the hopes are that he will be able to move home before too long.

There is not much of an update from the sheriff’s department.   They are still gathering and analyzing all the data to determine how to proceed.   It takes much longer than any of us expected it to but we’re glad for the thoroughness they’ve shown.  The driver was just 19 years old and made a life changing decision/action that day.  I imagine maybe his family has felt the impact of what happened also.

The support from everyone for Ken and his family has been astonishing and overwhelming. Personally I am grateful for so much and so many.   As his family navigates this new normal for a while, the help provided will allow him the best care options towards a full, even if a long, recovery.   Ken says he has to believe he will be back on the bike!   We all have to believe that too!

Thank you all again,

Debbi Krichko
