DESCRIPTION

SEE RIDE POLICIES BELOW ABOUT DEPARTURE TIMES AND THE POTENTIAL FOR DROPPING OF RIDERS

Dennis Hatton is turning 65 on June 25.  I am going to do a 65-mile ride to celebrate.  This is a mostly flat ride that includes two ferry rides.  It should be fun!

This is a chance to explore the lower Columbia River basin and enjoy the two ferry rides as part of the bike ride. Bring $6 cash only for the fare ($3 each way). The ferry ride is 3 miles of the route shown on the Ride with GPS map. This ride explores areas along and on an island of the Columbia River. It also travels through the wildlife refuge for the Columbian white-tailed deer. On previous rides I have seen deer and an eagle, in addition to many other birds.

The pace while riding should be 17 mph.  This is intended as a casual and fun ride.  I anticipate stops for pictures and to look at the scenery.

Slower riders are welcome if you can ride independently using a map and cue sheet.  I suggest that you find a buddy to ride at your pace, so you are not riding alone in an unfamiliar area.

A 41-mile option is available by meeting at the ferry.  Ferry departure is 10:15 AM with loading prior to that time.

Some cautions: About 12 miles of the route are on the shoulder of Highway 30, the highway between Portland and Astoria. There will be traffic passing by at high speed. The shoulders are generally wide but can be avoided by meeting at the ferry. There are also short sections on Highway 4 on the Washington side. Some sections of various roads are rough. There is also a mile of gravel trail in the wildlife refuge that is rideable on a road bike.

There is a store in Cathlamet at mile 27 and again at mile 48 where supplies may be purchased.

Departure Times – Ready to Leave -
Clatskanie City Park, Clatskanie OR – 65-mile route – 9:00 AM
Westport Ferry – 41-mile route - Ferry departs at 10:15 AM with loading about 10 minutes prior.

Ride Policies

Because there is a deadline to reach the ferry, you will be left behind if you are late or not ready at the times listed.  It is not fair to riders who are ready to risk missing the ferry by waiting for those who are late. This could also apply to tire flats or mechanical issues. Please plan your schedule accordingly.

The distance from the start to the ferry is 13 miles.  I have allowed 70 minutes to arrive at the ferry.  That should allow times for stops and pictures on the way to the ferry.  However, there is not a lot of extra time. Therefore, we will leave at the times listed, whether or not you are ready.

Faster or slower riders are welcome but be prepared to ride on your own.

All registered riders are welcome and may depart at any time to ride their own pace and distance; please let the ride leader know if you leave the group.
