Winter weather makes advanced scheduling of rides more difficult. If there appears to be some good weather, ride leaders may post rides the night before the ride. Or nasty weather will cause cancellations.
Since the buddies list is moderated, timely announcements about new rides or cancellations are difficult to get out. If the weather is bad, you should check the ride calendar before heading out to a ride. And if the weather is good and your looking for some riding buddies, don't forget to check the calendar for last minute ride postings.
