>> Hello,
>> I moved to Portland about a year ago and was extremely involved in cycling advocacy in Cleveland. At the Oregon Active Transportation Summit this week, I met a mother whose son was killed while riding. She inspired me to organize a Ride of Silence for Portland since Eugene, Corvallis and Salem had one but Portland didn't. Can you consider sending something out to your members or putting it on your calendar? Here is a link to the Facebook event plus the text from a media release:

>> On Wednesday May 16 the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor bicyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves. The purpose of the ride is:
>>
>> To HONOR those who have been injured or killed
>> To RAISE AWARENESS that bicycles are on our roads
>> To ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD
>>
>> The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. In its tenth year, Rides of Silence have been organized in all seven continents, 26 countries and all 50 states. There are no brochures, no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride is held during National Bike Month and aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police officers, city officials and others that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured while cycling.
>>
>> The Portland Ride of Silence will leave at 6pm on Wednesday May 16 from Portland Design Works (15 NE Hancock - near N Williams and NE Hancock). The route is welcoming and open to all ages, cycling experiences and skill levels and will travel slowly on N Williams, NE Going, NE 17th and Broadway. Riders are asked to wear white, if possible, which will add to the visual message of the silent ride.
>>
>> Thank you for considering it. My phone is 216-870-0057 if you'd like to talk with me.
