Buddies List

hardy cyclists

So, you thought riding here during the winter was unpleasant.  We saw this hardy Iceland cyclist on a day when the temperature was about 40, there were 35+ mph cross wind and it was pouring rain.  The bike is leaned over to counteract the crosswind.  Even just standing still was difficult in these winds as gusts would push you around. To make matters worse, you will notice this is a narrow road with no shoulder – and it was THE major road around Iceland with vehicles going 55mph.  Secondary road could be even narrower, as the second picture shows (any paved road had a 55mph speed limit except in town).  And good luck finding a day when the winds were less than 10 mph.  Makes you appreciate the great biking we have in this area.
